Working with The Challenge

GO have been working with The Challenge this summer. The Challenge support students between 15-17 who are completing the National Citizen Service. The students spend a month together and begin by taking part in outdoor adventure sports and camping. They then spend some time on team building courses before working with a charity. We were fortunate enough to be chosen by The Challenge to be the charity the students work with. They spent some time learning about the Charity, how it works, who it helps and what they can do to help. Lucy went to meet the students at the college where they were based to talk to them about the skills they could bring to the session that they would attend.
The day before the students attended GO club they went into the community to raise money and raise awareness for the charity. They all worked really hard to find different ways to explain to people about what we do; they developed a game where people could compete by throwing balls in a box they designed.
When they arrived at the club on the following day the students brought a brand new volleyball/badminton net for us to have and a beach ball. The students had spent a great amount of time deciding which net would be most beneficial for us and decided on one that could but put up at different heights and so could be used for different ages of children.
The students were introduced to the children by playing the ball name game that we play quite often at GO club. The children and young people interacted really well together and played lots of different games. The volleyball game was an amazing idea and the children really loved playing a tournament. The beach ball made it easy enough for the children to hit but it involved a little practise so that the children really felt a sense of achievement when the won a point.
Everyone at GO would like to thank The Challenge and the students who have worked really hard to support the charity over the summer.
