AN INNOVATIVE SERVICE OFFERING PERSONAL ASSISTANTS
FOR PEOPLE LOCALLY SUPPORTING INDEPENDENT PAYMENTS
What is Support in Action?
Support in Action is a scheme that enables Local Authorities to meet the criteria for National systems known as ‘Self Directed Support’, ‘Putting People First’ or ‘Personalised Budgets’.
Since the roll out and updates to the Care Act Nationally, Local Authorities are under increasing pressure to provide independent support services to people, allowing them to be in control of their own budgets and to offer accessible support available for all.
This is a tall order for a lot of areas, Action for People have worked with the National delivery team of a Personal Assistant provider helping set up their National scheme and locally in the South East – recruiting locally, providing flexible working solutions to many people who require part time flexible work resulting in a trained, vetted workforce of Personal Assistants who are accessible to those in the community who need extra support and care, from cleaning, cooking to walks in the local park.
All Personal Assistants recruited from local people are self employed and offer their services through a main locally set up Support in Action Scheme directory where people can independently choose and fund their own care and support.

“Making my own choices and being able to do what I want, when I want; as well as having the same opportunities and choices as others is important!”

Impact of the scheme
- Action for People's work with Bracknell (case study)
In October 2012 when Action for People first started to deliver Support with Confidence, the impact on the local economy of 16 PA’s delivering 900 hours of work at a cost of £10.50 on average resulted in a local impact on the economy of £102, 600 per annum.
In 2017 this has risen to 4451 hours per month by 45 PA’s at an average of £12.25 per hour and an impact on the local economy of £654,297 per annum.
On average a PA works 25hrs a week and this reflects the choice of self-employment in this sphere of work as a lifestyle choice.
